City Turning Recyclables into Library Books

Waste management will donate $5 for every ton of residential trash it collects in April.

During the month of April, Mission Viejo residents can turn their recyclables into children’s books.

And no, this is not an early April Fool’s Day prank.

Waste Management, Mission Viejo’s garbage hauler, will donate $5 to the Friends of the Mission Viejo library for every ton of residential recycled material collected, starting April 1.

The Friends of the Library plan to use the money to buy more children’s books.

Waste Management holds the program each spring, and last year, the month-long campaign netted $4,900 for the Friends of the Library, according to a news release from the city.

City staff ask that locals save recyclables for weekly curbside or multifamily bin service next month.

Some examples of recyclable material: newspapers, magazines, junk mail, telephone books, cardboard, metal cans, plastic beverage bottles, milk containers, frozen food boxes, glass bottles and jars.
