City Wants Volunteers for 6th Art Festival

Mission Viejo looking for artists, vendors and volunteers for the Arts ALIVE Festival May 5 and May 6.

Whether you can draw a sunset or draw a crowd, the city wants you.

Mission Viejo is looking for artists, vendors and volunteers for the sixth annual Arts ALIVE Festival May 5 and 6.

The event will feature street painting, artists workshops and local artists showcasing their work at and at the neighboring at 24932 Veterans Way.

Officials need volunteers ages 16 and older to help with interactive arts, craft activities and artist booths.

Dru Maurer, city cultural supervisor and festival head, said that volunteers are vital to keeping Arts ALIVE ... well, alive.

“We know that it takes everybody to make it happen,” Maurer said. “It creates fellowship for the community. There’s a sense of ownership for the festival.”

Maurer urges interested volunteers to sign up now.

“The sooner the better, so we can give them their jobs,” Maurer said.

Volunteer shifts are three to eight hours depending on the person’s availability.

The theme this year is the 1950s, and the event will also showcase the great animators of the 20th century.

Feature film and TV animation director, Steve Hickner -- who directed Prince of Egypt and Bee Movie, produced American Tail II: Fievel Goes West, We’re Back! A Dinosaur’s Story, and Balto and contributed to feature films like including Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, The Little Mermaid, The Great Mouse Detective, Antz, Shark Tale, Madagascar and Over the Hedge. -- is scheduled to make an appearance.

The festival runs Saturday, May 5, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, May 6, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
