Voters Send Ury, Schlicht Back to Council

Incumbents Frank Ury and Cathy Schlicht defeated four challengers in the race for two Mission Viejo City Council seats.

Barack Obama isn't the only one who gets to keep his job.

With all precincts counted, Mayor Frank Ury and Councilwoman Cathy Schlicht have defeated four challengers to return to the Mission Viejo City Council.

Challenger Wendy Bucknum received 302 fewer votes than Schlicht to end the race in third place.

Here is the final vote tally:

-Mayor Frank Ury: 14,753 (27.2 percent)

-Councilwoman Cathy Schlicht: 12,557 (23.1 percent)

-Challenger Wendy Bucknum: 12,255 (22.6 percent)

-Challenger Ed Sachs: 8,068 (14.8 percent)

-Challenger Richard Coleman: 3,795 (7 percent)

-Challenger Desi Kiss: 2,906 (5.3 percent)

Early in the evening as the results came in, Bucknum attended a post-election party with Ury, Councilman Dave Leckness and Councilwoman Trisha Kelley, among others.

Bucknum said she was happy with her campaign.

"I've done all I can. Here is the support," she said, gesturing to the partygoers. "I worked really hard and that's all you can do."

Frank Ury said he was confident the early tallies indicated his future success at the poll. He's been elected twice before by the largest number of votes in city history.

"I'm just really hoping Wendy can prevail," he said. "Hopefully we out-hustled them."

Leckness has supported Bucknum and Ury, most recently by standing on street corners and greeting residents for the past four nights. He said mail-in voters might have favored Schlicht because they didn't yet meet Bucknum.

Leckness said Bucknum and her campaign crew visited "almost every house in Mission Viejo."

Schlicht refused to comment.

"I have no respect for your publication," she told Patch.

And when Trish Kelley and Dave Leckness walked down the block to the Sachs of Schlicht party, they were asked to leave. Can you believe that?
Jim Crockett Jr November 07, 2012 at 08:54 AM
Yes Dan and you are one of the big reasons for their rejection ! You are a hate monger !
Dan Avery November 07, 2012 at 08:56 AM
I wasn't even at that party. It's you people who are rude and hate. It's beyond the pale that you tossed out Trish and Dave. You can't spin that. They are both well liked in this city.
Jim Crockett Jr November 07, 2012 at 09:17 AM
Private party Dan, and they had no reason to be there. Let me help you out--they are not well liked either ,
Dan Avery November 07, 2012 at 09:19 AM
Really, Francis? Are you so sure? They sure poll better than Cathy. Of course they were just extending a hand. You guy have never been popular and it's peculiar that you didn't accept it. But then not really. I mean anyone who was named after a girl...well...we all know who you like don't we, Francis?
Jim Crockett Jr November 07, 2012 at 09:24 AM
Grasping again Dan ? Keep trying Boy !
Dan Avery November 07, 2012 at 09:29 AM
"I have no respect for your publication," Boy now there's a smart politician for you. First time I saw this witch on the council she declared all dogs owners to be bad citizens. I thought: "do you realize your microphone is on?" People, wake up. I'm going to post her "best" moments from the city council meetings from now until the next time she runs every two weeks on protectmissionviejo.com

Dan, you by yourself got Cathy 1,500 votes. Thank you for being the Buffoon you are. The hit trash you authored got her another ton of votes too. The Nazi comment got some votes also. I am sure Wendy is now thanking you also---not !

My only regret was that Wendy did not mention her favoring the construction of a dog park in her campaign material. Everyone I talked to that has a dog were in favor of the park and many did not realize that some other candidates were opposed to the park. Having worked with Wendy personally, he is a great person and woukd have made a excellent councilman.
Sandra Stipp November 07, 2012 at 04:57 PM
I am very disappointed that Cathy Schlicht was re-elected. She is so opposed to having a dog park here in Mission Viejo. She is not for the people of Mission Viejo. She does not listen or care.
Shripathi Kamath November 07, 2012 at 05:17 PM
That's not what the voters said. There are people she speaks for and represents. There are people who oppose the dog park. Yes, there are other people who oppose all that, but votes matter. Want to change that, participate more, and often. Long before the elections are held. Come to city council meetings. Get your friends to do so as well.
Dan Avery November 07, 2012 at 05:28 PM
Boy I really really bug you people don't I? And you're so brave when you tell me from behind the fake names. What a bunch of cowards and bullies. The Nazi comment was in poor taste, I've admitted that, but it was entirely accurate.

Keep flapping your gums Dan, you are a hoot with your vile, negative personal comments it is the mesure of your disorentation. Again thanks for the laughs you BAGWORM. Dale A. Sandore (real name)

Everyone here, thanks for commenting. Political stories always draw hot comments, but please help re-enforce community standards by making sure they're not *too* hot. Please remember that by using Patch you agree to our terms of use, including: "You agree that you will not post or transmit to other users anything that contains content that: is defamatory, abusive, obscene, profane or offensive." That includes insults, however creative.

Wow Dale, " your vile, negative personal comments it is the mesure of your disorentation. Again thanks for the laughs you BAGWORM" That's not vile or negative at all. Way to man up and show us who you really are.
Dan Avery November 08, 2012 at 04:46 AM
So how are things at Saddleback, Terry?
Dan Avery November 08, 2012 at 04:47 AM
You've seen a creative insult, Pete? Please point it out next time. I'm trying to learn.
Dan Avery November 08, 2012 at 04:49 AM
Shripathi has a point. You might as well step up and get involved folks. The best they can do is the limp-wristed insults they hurl at me and a few others. So what? Their pitches come in so slowly I fall asleep long before it's time to swing. And the only way to get them out is by a lot of people being vocal. That, or as I keep saying, there is a real reason Sherman burned Atlanta to the ground. The Schlicht crowd should definitely keep that in mind. About Sherman I mean.
Dan Avery November 08, 2012 at 04:52 AM
So Francis, which one was it. They weren't welcome because of me, or it was a private party and they weren't welcome on their own. You have contradicted yourself. Not all that unexpected by the way. Like Schlicht endorsing outside PAC Money and saying she won't accept it all at the same time.
Dan Avery November 08, 2012 at 04:54 AM
Interesting that this one was first attributed to Kirk Kelley. Do you forget who you are pretending to be there Terry?
Lovey November 08, 2012 at 05:18 AM
So opposing a dog park makes one 'not for the people of MV'? I don't have a dog. I don't care if we have a dog park or not. Now that I think about it, I oppose a dog park. What's the cost to maintain this dog park and at whose expense??
Lovey November 08, 2012 at 05:22 AM
Dan Avery's comments are offensive. His comments need to be flagged for review before they're posted on this site.
Dan Avery November 08, 2012 at 05:24 AM
The cost would be the same as any of the other parks. Do you oppose them as well? The city pays for all maintenance on parks. They have $9 million that they can only spend on parks and recreation. By the way, a dog park is just another park for people. It is a chance for people to come together and get to know each other over a common interest. That breeds harmony and a stronger community instead of division which is our current norm. In fact people interact with each other much more at dog parks than at any other park except for the little league fields. But on those fields you have an us and them mentality. That doesn't exist in a dog park. The role of government is to foster community and working together. It is not to save money. It is to provide services to the citizens. Mission Viejo does a terrific job of that. Look at the Library and the community center for two examples. A dog park would just be another example of a successful city service for the citizens that enhances community.
Dan Avery November 08, 2012 at 05:27 AM
Care to explain to me exactly why they are offensive, Lovely? Being offensive is never my intent. When you make a charge like that it helps to be specific. Otherwise, you run the risk of being written off as a kook like Cricket et.al.
Terry Brown November 08, 2012 at 05:46 AM
Sure we do!
Walt Halagarda November 08, 2012 at 02:51 PM
Regarding the dog park, I agree with Mr. Avery's comments about the interaction of both individuals and dog owners at a dog park. We have visited several parks and it always so easy to start a conversation, because you already have something in common, your pets. We frequent the dog park off Sand Canyon in Irvine. Our 2 dogs can sense we are getting close and get very excited. I suspect anyone opposing a dog park does not have a dog and have never visited a dog park themselves. Volunteers have worked to acquire funds from dog owners to help defray the ongoing costs of the park. The plan is to put in comfortable benches and other amenities paid for by money donated to the cause. I believe most families have a dog and favor the park. Not everyone uses the library or animal shelter, but we shouldn't tear them down because some don't take advantage of the facilities. The Council should listen to what I believe is the majority and WORK TOGETHER to build a dog park that we can be proud of. I'll get off my soapbox now.

Lovey, if you see a comment by anyone that is offensive, please flag it. If enough people flag a comment on Patch, it will come down for an editor to review it. Rather than screen each individual comment, we prefer the community enforce reasonable standards on the comment boards. Please help us do that by flagging objectionable content.
Dan Avery November 09, 2012 at 05:58 PM
Thanks Mr. Halagarda. I look forward to working with you once we break ground on the park. Should be in the Spring.
