Dog Park to Open in 2014 (Grass Takes Time)

It will take about four months to build the Mission Viejo Dog Park, but that doesn't mean the park will be ready by fall.

After officially breaking ground on the new Mission Viejo Dog Park last week, park supporters are now in for a six-month wait, according to city officials.

Construction will take an estimated 120 days, City Manager Dennis Wilberg said. But that doesn't mean the park will be ready by fall.

It will take warm weather to germinate the 65,000 square feet of grass seedlings, he said. And that means dog park supporters will need to wait until early winter 2014 to legally take their dogs off-leash in Mission Viejo.

Three acres of slopes and three acres of usable area for dogs to run are planned for the six-acre park, along with a parking lot.

The will park will house three dog play areas. The large area will be 1.5 acres and the small area will be .5 acres. The third area will be .1 acres and it will be dedicated as single-owner use. The park will also feature a 42-car parking lot, a plaza for special events and a walking trail with arroyo views.
