When it comes to pay and healthcare benefits for city council members throughout the state, there is no set guideline or consistency in how these compensations are doled out.

Some cities throughout the state offer generous health care benefits along with their salaries. Of course the population as well as revenue in each city varies as much as the benefits for the city council members. Yet, the size of the city does not appear to be the deciding factor.

The highest-compensated city council in Orange County is Irvine. According to the Los Angeles Times, Laguna Hills gives the bulk of its compensation through its health care benefits which are among the highest in the state.

Mission Viejo City Council falls below average for the county for its compensations. But there are five other cities similar in size and one twice as large in the state that provide no healthcare benefits at all for their council members.

Should Mission Viejo continue to compensate its city council members with health care benefits? Should all cities move towards providing health care benefits for their council members?
