New Dog Park Contest: Supporters Seek $100,000

The owner of mvdogpark.com is encouraging residents to take part in a contest. If enough supporters join, the city will get $100,000 toward a new dog park.

UPDATE: This contest is closed. Results will be known June 13. The following article was written May 31.

A proposed Mission Viejo dog park could get a boost if its supporters win a $100,000 Internet contest.

But to win, it needs lots of residents to sign up in support of the city by June 1.

Susan Sellers, who runs mvdogpark.com, says winning the contest would "definitely" bring a dog park to town faster.

For Mission Viejo to be in the running, it needs to be among the top 25 cities at the site to receive sign-ups. After that, organizers will prepare a video explaining why this city needs a dog park.

Not everyone supports a new dog park in town. Some residents say the park is not worth the cost.

Although he doesn't oppose a dog park per se, resident Larry Gilbert has written several blog posts about his opposition to publicly funding the proposed park.

In one satirical post, he called the park a "costly pork barrel project."

Gilbert prefers private donations to pay for the dog park, not public tax dollars.
