Photos: Abe Lincoln Spotted with Mayor

More than 110 Republicans heard Mayor Frank Ury speak on President Lincoln's birthday.

There was a chance meeting between Mayor Frank Ury and American icon Abraham Lincoln over the weekend.

Ury spoke to a crowd of over 110 at the Casta Del Sol Republican Club's 28th Annual Lincoln Birthday Champagne Brunch last Sunday in celebration of the  anniversary of President Lincoln's 203rd birthday.

The Brunch is a tradition at Casta Del Sol in Mission Viejo. A number of Mission Viejo mayors and city council members have attended the Club’s meetings in the past. This year, councilwomen and were also in attendance.

Mayor Ury stated one of the biggest challenges was dealing with the government of the State of California and trying to keep the city’s money in the City of Mission Viejo. Ury also believes the city of Mission Viejo needs to be pro-business which will in turn create new jobs. Mayor Ury then answered several questions from the audience which ranged from the impacts of the dismantling of the Community Development Association and the construction being done on Casta Del Sol Drive where the .

The CDS Republican Club also had an election of officers. The following people were elected to steer the Club for 2012:  Linda Barnes, President; Mike Magazin, 1st Vice President; Marti Lothers, 2nd Vice President; Florian Jeffers, Secretary; and Wendy Allaire, Treasurer. Outgoing officers were awarded certificates for their years of dedicated service. Awards went to Dan Burns who has served as Treasurer for over nine years and Dorrit McKeague who served for five years as Secretary of the Club.

Lincoln, our 16th President, spoke about the events leading up to the Civil War and how he had to make very important decisions for the United States of America. Lincoln ended his speech with the battle of Gettysburg and a very emotional and power packed Gettsyburg Address that led to a hearty round of applause. Lincoln was being portrayed by Robert Broski, from West Covina. Lincoln also visited with the attendees during the Brunch and was available for pictures.

Another guest, Steven Thornton, from Congressman office, explained how candidates will be listed on the June 5, 2012, primary ballot and how the lines have been redrawn through the redistricting process so that Miller will no longer represents Mission Viejo. Mission Viejo is now in the 45th Congressional District. Mr. Thornton told the audience that because of the passage of California’s that certain races would have no separate party distinction and that all parties will be listed for that office for all to vote on without regard to party affiliation. The top two vote-getters for those races will be placed on the General Election Ballot in November. The races that are affected are the US House of Representatives, State Senators and State Assembly.

One of the goals of the CDS Republican Clubs is to educate voters and the club is planning meet-the-candidate events in the near future for candidates for upcoming races in the Mission Viejo area.
