Youth Sports; Steps Toward Success

Developing a successful youth sports program: Working with children and making a difference in their lives' is sometimes challenging, though ultimately incredibly fulfilling.

Success can be defined in a number of ways. It can be measured by wins vs. losses, amount of winning titles, or as watching the progression of an athlete. My definition of success cannot be depicted through the use of generalized terms. The programs and organizations that have become most successful are those that go above and beyond expected criteria. It is not only the administration, or the coaches, that make for a winning team.

A winning team consists of support from parents, athletes, fans, and community. Just as in the business world, the success of an athletic program is dependent on the effectiveness of its leader/leaders. In order for a program to be successful, the coach must view himself as a CEO and must maintain control over all important decisions relating to the program. Although there are multiple contributors, the head coach is ultimately responsible for developing and maintaining athletic programs. A head coach must showcase his/her core beliefs, values and standards for the team and those affiliated with the team.

While development and progression in the field occurs, it is vital for a coach to have a command and understanding of something that should not waiver: their ethics, morals and values. Many of these components can be seen in ones coaching philosophy. The more clearly a coach is able to articulate their philosophy, the easier it is to carry out decisions. The decisions a coach has to make should always have the best interest of the athlete at heart. Character education is the responsibility a coach upholds to shape not only an athlete but an individual as well.
