Architect: Hankey K-8 Facing $19.7 Mil Remodel
With Capistrano Unified looking at a total tab of $822 million, here's Carl Hankey School's portion.
Carl Hankey K-8 School has $19.7 million in facility needs, according to a Capistrano Unified School District architect.
Of that amount, however, $9 million would go toward replacing half of the portable classrooms with permanent structures. Another $1 million would go to addressing postponed routine maintenance, such as paint, floor covering and paving.
The school district commissioned an intense study of all of its facilities in 2009. It was recently updated with 2013 pricing. The district is facing $822 million worth of needs and only has about $44 million on hand to address them.

The 2013 number also includes $522,000 for upgraded technology for students.
The campus has a number of issues. While firefighters have access to the building, they cannot turn their trucks around. And should students have to evacuate, they have to exit through other buildings, which is violation of state law, WLC Architects of Rancho Cucamonga found.

In addition, some of the classrooms are smaller than 960 square feet, the minimum required size for a public classroom in California.
