Resident Wants to Ban Student Runners from Nellie Gail Horse Trails

Citing safety issues, an equestrian asks the Saddleback Valley Unified school board to rein in its cross-country teams.

“It was the scariest thing that’s ever happened,” Nellie Gail Ranch resident Kim Crane said Tuesday night.

She was recalling her encounter with a squad of student runners on the exclusive community's horse trails.

“Last season, a large group of runners caused our horse to rear and nearly kick a student in the head," Crane said. When Crane then told the students about the dangers of running on horse trails and asked them to use a nearby sidewalk, they declined, she added.

On Tuesday, Crane asked the Saddleback Valley Unified school board to ban cross-country team training on Nellie Gail Ranch horse trails, which are marked as private property.

A marathon runner herself, Crane said there are many other options for cross-country practice.

SVUSD Superintendent Clint Harwick said he would look into the issue.

"SVUSD Superintendent Clint Harwick said he would look into the issue." Educating the school Board is not possible. It would not help if you dropped a truck load of "shared trail" etiquette pamphlets in their office. If you want anyone in the SVUSD to look into an issue, sue them. They don't understand anything unless it is put in monetary terms.

What about Nellie Gail association? They've gotta have some influence in this.....after all if something did happen to a student their parents will be the first to sue! I agree with you Kim Crane and I think horses have the right of way??

Motorized --> Mechanized / Bicycle --> Hiking / Running --> Equestrian. That's supposed to be the "yield to" order.
