Photos: A 'Beach Holiday' for Linda Vista Staff

The PTA at the Mission Viejo school brings in sand, palm trees and a free lunch for teacher appreciation this week.

Teachers and staff at Linda Vista Elementary School in Mission Viejo were swept away for a "beach holiday" Tuesday at an annual teacher appreciation luncheon sponsored by the school's PTA.

Parents at the school hauled beach chairs, palm trees and even sand into the multipurpose room, transforming it into a fun beachside resort.

As loudspeakers piped such songs as the Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations," PTA volunteers served cheeseburgers, barbecued chicken, watermelon and ice cream to the school's 55 teachers and other employees as a thank-you for their hard work.

"It is amazing," school psychologist Hillary Gosselaar said as she reclined under a beach umbrella and ate. "It's so much fun."

The event had a festive air, in part because Linda Vista Elementary learned in May that it will not be closed at the end of the school year.

While the school board voted to declare Linda Vista a "surplus" property that could be closed and leased sometime in the future, it did not take action to close it at its May meeting, as some had feared.
