Timeline: Police Investigate Allegations of Drunken Carl Hankey Teacher

A timeline of events since Friday when an allegedly drunken substitute teacher arrived at Carl Hankey Elementary School.

An investigation into a possibly drunken substitute teacher at is ongoing, Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Amormino confirmed Tuesday morning.

The following information is from Amormino. Here's what we know so far:

  • At the end of the school day Friday, a female substitute teacher in her 50s walked by ' office. Watkins noticed the teacher stumbling and called her in. "As she was speaking to her, [Watkins] did detect the strong smell of alcohol," Amormino said.
  • Watkins tried to distract the teacher, who has remained unnamed pending investigation. The principal was concerned about the teacher driving, Amormino said. Police were called.
  • Although police responded in 3½ minutes, the sheriff's spokesman said, they did not find the teacher. The teacher remained missing after police searched the area.
  • Around 5:30 p.m. Friday, three sixth-grade boys spoke to police about the teacher's alleged antics.
  • Over the weekend, nothing happened, "since all the kids were gone," Amormino said.
  • Police interviewed kids from the classroom in question Monday morning. Although there have been reports of a dance contest, kids dancing on tables and chairs and bizarre behavior on behalf of the teacher, the results of those interviews have not yet been made public.
