This year, the top elementary school teacher from Capistrano Unified School District teaches in Mission Viejo.
Christine Taglieri of spends her days with kindergarteners and first-graders. And Friday she had a few unexpected guests show up in her classroom.
She was surprised early Friday morning by family and district officials carrying balloons and announcing she was teacher of the year.
Taglieri started with the district in 1994, said district spokesman Marcus Walton. She's been teaching since 1987.
Superintendent Joe Farley said Taglieri gives students "excellent classroom instruction on a daily basis."
Taglieri was one of two Mission Viejo teachers picked for the top teach honor this year.
