100th Marathon for Father/Daughter Duo

Sally Boles and her father Harold Jackson are celebrating this weekend—if you can call running 26.2 miles "celebrating."

This will be the duo's 100th marathon. And they've run 57 of those marathons together.

The self-proclaimed "marathon maniacs" got started when Dad gave it a shot in 1983.

"That was going to be his one and only marathon," Boles said.

But in 1986 the L.A. Marathon started up, and Jackson decided to take another crack at it. The results weren't always pretty, as his daughter recalls.

"I went to cheer my dad on and ended up running the last two miles of the marathon with him," she recalls. "He had blood oozing from his toes out of his shoes. There were old ladies in front of him, fat men in front of him, people that I would never imagine would be ahead of my dad."

From that experience, Sally realized marathons were for everyone.

She decided she'd run with him, and in 1994 the two finished the L.A. Marathon together.

"As the years passed and we ran more marathons we decided that we liked this marathon thing," she said.

Now the goal is to run a marathon in all 50 states. They've hit the pavement in 38 states so far.

With this weekend's marathon in Carlsbad, father and daughter will have 100 marathons each under their belts.

So what drives her to run so hard?

"My goal is to be here and be healthy for my unborn grandchildren," Boles said. "I know many other people who want the same thing, but may just need one small story to inspire them."
