Mission Viejo's Boys: Top Ten in Multisport Commissioner's Cup

A CIF Southern Section championship in baseball and finals appearances in basketball and football helped the Diablos finish among top 10 in annual section-wide competition.

boys athletic program finished ninth in the 20th-annual CIF Southern Section Commissioner’s Cup competition, where places were determined by a point system awarded for advancement in the section’s 2010-11 playoffs.

The Diablos' boys won team championships in and reached the finals in and .

Loyola of Los Angeles won its third consecutive boys title, edging Oaks Christian, 20-19. The Cubs won section titles in boys basketball, swimming and diving and track and field and were semifinalists in water polo and runners-up in cross-country.

was fifth in the boys competition.

On the girls' side, Oaks Christian of Westlake Village won the title with 18 points, acquiring section titles in softball and soccer, finishing runner-up in basketball and track and field and as a semifinalist in volleyball. It marks the first Commissioner’s Cup victory for the Lady Lions.

girls finished with as many points (16) as runner-up Harvard-Westlake of North Hollywood but were third because of the tie-breaker system. The Wolverines were looking for their fourth title.

has won six Commissioner's Cups (three by the boys and three by the girls), which is more than any other school in the 578-member section has won since the award was established during the 1991-92 school year.

Corona del Mar’s girls have five cups, all between 2003 and 2009, while Loyola has won five boys titles, including the last three.

“We at the CIF-SS are very proud of these outstanding programs for their hard work and dedication that has resulted in success on the field and courts,” Southern Section commissioner Rob Wigod said in a release. “Their determination and teamwork has resulted experiences that will last them a lifetime.”

Scoring included five points for a division championship; three for a division runner-up finish; two for advancing the the semifinals or for a third-place finish in a team-place sport (ie. cross-country, golf, swimming and diving and track and field), and one for finishing fourth in a team-finish sport.

In cases where a tie occurred, the top 10 schools’ places were determined by several tie-breaker methods, according to the section.

  1. Loyola -- 20 points (5 for basketball; 5 for track and field; 3 for cross-country and 2 for water polo).

  3. Pasadena Poly -- 17 (5 for baseball; 3 for water polo; 3 for track and field; 2 for football; 2 for basketball; 2 for volleyball).
  4. Servite -- 16* (5 for football; 5 for golf; 3 for wrestling; 3 for track and field).
