Sports Shorts: Diablos Look to Continue Dominance of Poly

Mission Viejo's football team will be playing for its fourth-consecutive victory over Jackrabbits on Friday night, plus Capistrano Valley plays L.B. Cabrillo and Trabuco Hills takes on JSerra. Plus cross-country, girls volleyball and boys water polo.

Mission Viejo’s football team plays host to rival Long Beach Poly on Friday night in the biggest game of a weekend that features some very big games.

The Diablos (2-1), , are coming off a confidence-building last Friday following their humbling trip to New Jersey. Mission Viejo opened its season with a , then .

The Jackrabbits (3-0), , probably consider themselves lucky to still be undefeated after barely holding off City Section title contender Narbonne of Harbor City, 19-16. Poly opened its season with a 24-23 victory over Grant of Sacramento, followed by a 38-18 victory over perennial City Section power Carson.

Both teams are quick, especially on defense, but the Diablos may have a few more weapons on offense. Mission Viejo is averaging 29.7 points per game, while Poly is averaging 27.

Mission Viejo's offense is led by senior quarterback Alex Bridgford, running backs Jahleel Pinner, a senior committed to USC, and Marcus Collins, a junior, and senior wide receiver D.J. Wilson. Long Beach is led by senior quarterback Chaiyse Hales, junior running backs Manusamoa Luuga and Gerard Wicks and senior wide receiver Richard Smith.

The Diablos have won all three previous meetings between the teams, including last year's game, 37-7.

If you can’t get a ticket (or find a parking space), the game will be streamed live on FoxSportsWest.com’s "Prep Zone," beginning with the kickoff at 7:30 p.m.

In other Friday games:

JSerra (2-0) at Trabuco Hills (2-1), 7 p.m. -- The Lions of JSerra are off to another impressive start with a 28-21 victory over Long Beach Wilson and a 51-13 win over L.A. Wilson, but neither of those opponents is nearly as good as Trabuco Hills. I’m sure I don’t need to remind anybody about JSerra’s impressive start (and disastrous finish) in 2010, but a similar victory over the Mustangs -- the Lions beat Trabuco Hills, 40-17, last year -- would be very impressive. Trinity League rival Santa Margarita beat Trabuco Hills, 35-14, last week. Can the Lions, behind talented seniors quarterback Jake Hall and wide receiver Jonavaughn Williams, put up those same kinds of numbers against the Mustangs and their very impressive senior running back, Mitchell Simonsen? It's going to be tough.

Capistrano Valley (0-3) at Long Beach Cabrillo (2-1), 7 p.m. -- The host Jaguars bounced back from their season-opening whipping at the hands of San Clemente, 35-6, to defeat Lynwood, 21-16, and North Torrance, 56-36. Cabrillo is primarily a passing team (243.7 yards per game) behind senior quarterback Derek Stewart, but can run as well (185 yards per game) behind Stewart, senior Darren Johnson and junior Latrell Flowers. Capistrano Valley has surrendered nearly twice the number of points its scored. The Cougars, who played Trabuco Hills tough in a 28-21 season-opening loss, also fell to San Fe Christian, 13-12, and powerful Cypress, 42-10. Capistrano Valley, which defeated Cabrillo last season, 37-20, is led by junior quarterback Mason Dossey and senior running back James Benedix.
