Grab Some Bread at San Juan's Ecology Center

The same place that offers eco-tips will also become a bakery once a month.

The Ecology Center in San Juan Capistrano has been a place to learn about your carbon footprint, how to raise backyard chickens and is now a place where you can pick up freshly made bread once a month.

Carb-phobes, time to shake in your boots because we’re talking sourdough, campagne, multigrain, and brioch – and that’s not counting seasonal loaves, said Jeff Davis, spokesman for the Ecology Center.

The Community Supported Bakery “is a new program we've launched with Bread Artisan Bakery [in Santa Ana]. Each month, you can order fresh, local, and handmade bread to be available for pick-up here at The Ecology Center,” Davis said.

Buying locally produced, artisanal goods helps build and strengthen the local community and economy, plus uses significantly fewer natural resources, Davis said.

Breads will weigh in at 1.5 lb each and vary in cost depending on the loaf, anywhere from $5-$8, he said. This month’s varieties are harvest, multigrain, sourdough, campagne, brioche pull-a-part, cinnamon-swirl brioche, pancetta, asiago, chive bread and rustic grissini (breadsticks) in salt, seeded and pretzel.

All purchases must be pre-ordered by end-of-day Thursday. You can order here. Pre-orders will be ready for pick up Saturday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Even if you forget to place an order, you can sample some bread at 1 p.m.
