Mission Viejo is one step closer to two new daycares following the Monday planning commission meeting
Two new daycares were approved by the planning commission Monday, Associate City Planner Tim Martin said. One of the businesses is planning to open in south Mission Viejo, while the other plans to open near Lake Mission Viejo. Here's a quick look at both daycares. Umaña Academy is planning to open just north of Crown Valley near Sport Chalet and Café Maiz with a 5,040 sq. ft. building and an outdoor play area of unspecified size. Daycare would be provided for young children, along with fine art classes for small groups of children under 13. The average number of students planned for the site is 50. The owner, Maureen Umaña Boatman of San Juan Capistrano, already owns and operates a similar business in Ladera Ranch. She said she plans to…

Crooks are promising Southern California Gas customers a credit on their bills in exchange for Social Security numbers and other personal info.
Southern California Gas Co. is warning customers about a scam in which the culprits tell victims they can get credits on their utility bills if they provide information such as a Social Security number. According to the gas company, scammers have visited customers in person, used social media sites and even sent text messages to victims claiming that President Barack Obama is offering a program of bill credits or direct payment of bills. Gas Co. officials said workers for the utility always carry proper identification when visiting customers, and they do not randomly call or text customers asking for Social Security numbers or other personal information. Customers should verify a person's employment before allowing anyone into their home …
Some schools, such as El Toro, were solidly in the playoff field. Others have to play wild card games today to get into the playoff bracket. One local school is seeded in the top four.
They're longshots to begin with, and their chances of winning a Southern Section baseball title won't be helped by having to play a wild card game today just to get into the first round of the playoffs. But that's the task facing teams such as JSerra, San Clemente and Capistrano Valley in Division 1 and Trabuco Hills and San Juan Hills in Division 2. For them, the do-or-die playoffs begin today, which will put extra strain on pitching rotations that must win five games to win a title once the first round begins on Thursday for some times and Friday for others. The playoff pairings for the seven divisions were released on Monday by the Southern Section office, and there was only one south Orange County team that was seeded into one of the …

"...slow crawl back toward toward normalcy". Are we going back to normal? I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that the 2004-2009 California housing price run-up, bubble and crash was anything but "normal". Granting $685,000 mortgages to illegal immigrants, school teachers and bus drivers with nothing down, is not normal. $375,000 in home equity withdrawals over 2 years via HELOCs and …   more ›
