I'm amazed anyone would try to challenge the reporting of a felony arrest of a high school coach.Read More Sorry, DozerBob, but that's news. It may be sad on a personal level---as is a lot of news--but it's certainly worthy of reporting and following up on. Patch needs to find out more. Is he still on staff or paid leave? Will the teachers' union support him to the hilt like they normally do, no matter what the offense? Is there any possibility he was sharing or selling heroin with students? If I were a parent with a student at Tesoro, I would be extremely disturbed. (And yes, I hope this arrest will be what Mr. Nelson needs to turn his life around.)

He's not a teacher, so you can lay off the union. He was simply a position coach--low pay, not asRead More many hours as head coach or offenseive/defensive coordinators. There are students at the school who use and sell drugs--kids don't need to go to coaches to get them. Parents at Tesoro, and all other high schools, should be concerned about drugs. The only students he was in contact with are football players. If you saw the physical training they go through nearly year-round, you would know that a heroin addict could not do that. Unfortunately, I've had a family member lost to heroin, so I've seen the physical toll it takes. All credit goes to the coach's mom who apparently was left with no option but to call the police on her adult son. It's a heartbreaking decision, but often the only option available to a parent trying to save their child's life once that child has turned 18.

it's always bizarre when someone you knew gets into this kind of mess. it's sad to see someone whoRead More had the opportunity to be successful and help other people relate to their love of football and just throw it away to do something stupid. come on, nick, you've always been better than that...

Over how many days did she teach this class to 5,000 (2042?) kids?

Glad to see these child predators have been properly identified and removed from future involvementRead More in the sport and related activities. Unfortunately, these folks are very broken and will always need a strong community of people surrounding them to keep them out of trouble in the future. Prayers to the victims that they may find true healing and eventual peace with the crimes committed against them.

"Heavy sigh. I'm the moderator here." Sorry, Penny. When you gave mfriedrich a positiveRead More response to his off-topic post I interpreted that as your encouragment of said discussion. It does get confusing at times from a poster's perspective. I sure you could understand that. :^) "JustUs, while your comments don't violate TOU, they do get close." It's uncanny that fact chucker can insult and provoke me and you don't name him specifically at all. But if I respond back in kind to his rude comments you name and admonish me. That is not what I would call an objective moderator. And if I violate your policies by observing and communicating the simple truth on this matter then do what you got to do. Just because you are a moderator you should not be allowed to play favorites here.

My two cents: El Toro is a three-point shooting team. It had a good half, and it had a bad half.Read More When you don't make your shots (as in the second half) you don't necessarily get a chance to set up on defense. It happened in the 1A finals at the arena, and happened in the second half against a very good Loyola team that is among the best in the state. Shooters shoot, and they keep shooting until their touch comes back. A shooting touch isn't a reflection on the coach. Turnovers against Loyola's pressure defense (after it started making some shots and had a chance to set up) hurt El Toro. There's all kinds of bad things that happen on the basketball court when you don't score.
