Mission Viejo man and his former tenant are accused in arson and insurance fraud plot.
Four oil paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries may have undone an arson and insurance fraud scheme designed to collect more than $1 million, authorities said Wednesday. State investigators have arrested Max Astan, a 61-year-old Mission Viejo resident, on suspicion of conspiracy, insurance fraud and intimidating a witness after a house he owned in Granada Hills burned down in June 2008. They also arrested his tenant, Van Nuys real estate agent Maryann Khosravizadeh, on suspicion of arson and conspiracy. After the fire, Astan filed an insurance claim, saying he had kept Persian rugs and other personal belongings in the house, including two 17th-century oil paintings and two 18th-century paintings valued at $147,500. But L.A. …

The San Juan Capistrano teacher appears on the Today show to tell her story for the first time. Then the show reunites her with two of her rescuers.
Kelli Groves, the San Juan Capistrano teacher whose car dangled off a Santa Barbara bridge for hours in a January rescue that made headlines around the world, spoke for the first time publicly Tuesday on “Today.” “I could not see either one of them,” Groves said of her two daughters, ages 10 and 10 weeks, who were also trapped in the borrowed BMW, hardly recognizable as it clung to a guardrail, more off than on the bridge. Watch the video here. Groves is a teacher at Del Obispo Elementary, where her daughter Sage also attends. She was on maternity leave after having Mylo. The threesome was headed to visit the mission at San Luis Obispo for Sage’s fourth-grade mission project. That’s when suddenly, just south of Buellton, a driver of a big …

Moments after a shooting rampage inside the Seal Beach beauty salon where his ex-wife worked, a "very calm'' gunman shot his final victim in the parking lot before driving away, a witness to Orange County's worst mass killing told a grand jury, according to transcripts released Thursday. Kenneth Caleb, a regular at Patty's Place restaurant next to Salon Meritage, stared through a ``chaotic scene'' last Oct. 12 to see Scott Evans Dekraai in the parking lot about 6 feet away. ``Everybody is running but this one gentleman, and at first when I looked at him, I thought he was a derelict and he just didn't understand what was going on, and he was putting himself in harm,'' Caleb told the grand jury in January. ``He had zero expression on his …

Police arrested a former student for allegedly stealing wallets, backpacks from a local high school band room.
Surveillance video led police to an arrest near Mission Viejo High Tuesday after students' backpacks, wallets and other possessions were stolen from the school band room. Around 6:30 p.m. Monday, someone was caught on tape entering the unlocked band room and stealing student items, police Sgt. Sandra Kirsch said. The thief probably didn't know he was on camera the whole time. A school resource officer checked the surveillance tapes and recognized former student Kyrise Rowe, 18, Kirsch said. Rowe was arrested the next day at 2:54 p.m. in the Taco Bell on the 25000 block of Chrisanta Drive, Rowe said. "When the deputy told Rowe about the surveillance cameras, Rowe admitted to stealing the items," Kirsch said. All the items were recovered and…

A man in Mission Viejo was arrested for carrying an imitation Glock 23 disguised as the real thing
What would you do if you spotted someone carrying a handgun? An employee at TJ Maxx noticed a black handgun in the waistband of a customer Tuesday around 8 p.m., Police Sgt. Sandra Kirsch said. The customer, Gulled Mohamed Omar, 21, left the store but stayed in the area. Deputies detained and searched him. But what they found wasn't a real gun, Kirsch said. Instead Omar was carrying an imitation of a Glock 23 handgun concealed under his shirt. The gun originally had color indicating it was fake, but someone had scraped it off, Kirsch said. Omar was arrested and taken to jail for altering an imitation handgun, a misdemeanor, the sergeant said.
