Carl Hankey is a kindergarten through eighth grade school. The middle schoolers are separated from the elementaryMore students. Carl Hankey offers an International Baccalaureate program which feeds into Capistrano Valley High School's IB program. Besides teaching the California standards, it also focuses on foreign language and technology. The program is self funded by parents and a grant from British Petroleum. The school mascot is the hawk. Carl Hankey, an orange rancher, was a school board member for many years and the unofficial weatherman in San Juan Capistrano.

The Capistrano Unified School District includes 61 schools with  a student population that has nearly doubled inMore the past 20 years to 51,000. The large district includes a substantial swath of South Orange County in 195 square miles including, along with Mission Viejo, San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente, Dana Point, Laguna Niguel, Aliso Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita and the communities of Las Flores, Coto de Caza, Dove Canyon, Ladera Ranch and Wagon Wheel. The large district offices are located here in San Juan Capistrano.  Superintendent Joseph M. Farley is under the direction of the Board of Trustees who include Ellen Addonizio, John Alpay, Jack Brick, Anna Bryson, Lynn Hatton, Sue Palazzo and Gary Pritchard.

Trish Kelley, a Mission Viejo resident since 1977, was first elected to the City Council in 2002. She is marriedMore with three children, who all attended schools in the Capistrano Unified School District. She cites advancing the renovations of Montanoso and Sierra Recreation Centers as well as expanded hours at the library on her list of accomplishments. She also volunteers at her church, Grace Community. Kelley represents Mission Viejo on the Orange County Fire Authority Board of Directors and on the Board of Directors for the San Joaquin Hills Transportation Corridor Agency. She also serves on the Southern California Association of Governments Transportation Committee and the Orange County Parks Commission. She has served as mayor in 2005, 2008 and 2010.
