City Postpones Fire Map Vote, Again

For the second time, the Mission Viejo City Council voted Monday night to wait before adopting state-mandated fire maps.

The City Council has again postponed a vote to approve state-mandated fire maps that place thousands of Mission Viejo homes within a new "very high fire hazard" zone. About 100 residents showed up Monday night to sound off about the new maps. Homeowners fear the maps will raise insurance rates and decrease the value of their homes. Most of the homes affected sit on the city's eastern border, north of the 241 toll road or near El Toro Road. Resident Joe Holtzman compared the law to British oppression prior to the Revolutionary War. "You don't want this law," he said. He said the state's methods of deciding what neighborhoods and buildings go on the new maps was kept secret. "When you try to look into their models, they're proprietary--they …

The Miracle Met in Mission Viejo

Rod Gaspar, one of the 1969 World Series Champion Mets, tells how he propelled himself into Mets history and what he's been up to in Mission Viejo.

Rod Gaspar’s finest moments in baseball came in the 1969 World Series with the Miracle Mets. That was the year the Mets, a team who had never enjoyed a winning season, defied everyone's expectations. Coming into the series against the Baltimore Orioles which fielded Hall of Famers like Frank Robinson, Brooks Robinson and Jim Palmer, Gaspar boldly declared the Mets would win the series in four straight games. His statement infuriated the Baltimore Orioles, including Frank Robinson, who responded, “Who the hell is Rod Gaspar?” Gaspar, a Mets outfielder, made sure the Orioles would remember him. In game 4 of the World Series, with the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the tenth, Gaspar pinch-ran for catcher Jerry Grote on second base. The next …

Alleged Murderer's Mustang Found in Mission Viejo

Authorities arrested Jonathan Chacon, who is believed to be responsible for killing two women on Rockefeller Lane, in Mexico, police say.

A man who was caught in Baja California early Wednesday and charged with murder ditched his Mustang in Mission Viejo. Police believe Jonathan Scott Chacon, 23, killed a teen and her mother at an apartment in North Redondo Beach. A resident spotted Chacon's vehicle, a black 1996 Mustang with a torn convertible top, and called police, Redondo Beach police Lt. Joe Hoffman told City News Service. Chacon was arrested early Wednesday morning in Baja California, according to a news release from the Redondo Beach Police Department. The murder victims were Vicki Bergman, 59, and her daughter, Courtney, 19, said coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter. The bodies were found by a co-worker of one of the victims, said Redondo Beach police Capt. Jeff Hink…

Fire Marshall: New Fire Maps Won't Raise Insurance

Residents gathered Tuesday night to learn about new fire hazard maps drafted by state firefighters.

Will homeowners see a rate hike on their insurance if new state-issued fire maps are approved? That's what residents asked the Orange County Fire Authority during an information meeting in the Saddleback Room of the Civic Center Tuesday night. Frustrated property owners from newly-designated high risk zones sat down to listen to the OCFA’s presentation on fire hazards. But after 20 minutes, several audience members voiced their impatience and expressed their concerns about rising insurance costs. Earlier this month, city leaders postponed a vote to approve new state fire maps. You can find out if your house is on the new maps here. There's nothing to worry about, Fire Marshall Laura Blaul said. “It’s not based on the maps,” Blaul said. “We…

Poll: What Street Needs Better Traffic Light Timing?

By synchronizing traffic signals, a county proposal could cut down traffic and wait times on Crown Valley Parkway.

Tired of waiting in traffic on Crown Valley Parkway? A $459,000 county proposal before the Board of Supervisors Tuesday could reduce traffic congestion between Ladera Ranch and Dana Point if approved. It affects 30 crossings over nine miles of road. The cooperative agreement between cities and the county would improve traffic signals in Mission Viejo, Laguna Niguel and every other area Crown Valley runs through. What does each entity get out of the deal?

More Than 3 Days of Gaming = Sorest Throat Ever

Professional video game player Sam "Milkfat" Braithewaithe says he's broken the world record for longest time spent playing a strategy video game as a fundraiser for Doctors Without Borders.

Sam Braithwaite woke up Monday morning with a 102-degree fever. His throat was so sore it hurt to eat all day. He also woke up a potential world record holder. On Jan. 29 at 3 p.m., Sam “Milkfat” Braithwaithe may have played his way into the next Guiness Book of World Records. How? He spent 76 hours playing Heroes of Newerth, an online strategy game. It wasn't personal glory driving Milkfat to attempt the record for longest time spent playing a strategy video game, he said. Rather, he wanted to raise money for Doctors Without Borders, a network of doctors who work in some of the world's poorest countries. He wanted to raise at least $9,000 through this gaming marathon. In the end, he did more than just that. Milkfat took center stage at …

Organic Composting is Good for Soil? Think Again, Says Gary Matsuoka

Think organic composting is good for your soil? Innovation and experience have taught Gary Matsuoka about horticulture.

Armed with scientific know-how, Gary Matsuoka has closed up shop and hit the road to sell living plants at farmers markets. Though he still uses the name Laguna Hills Nursery, the shop built by his father in 1969 on Jeronimo Road in Lake Forest closed up shop in 2010, Matsuoka said. Now the owner is selling plants and throwing in free gardening lessons at nearby farmers markets, like the new one in Mission Viejo. So many plants are sold at Laguna Hills Nursery. There are bare-root fruit trees that might grow into an orchard. And there are herbs, ornamental plants, and plenty of soil to grow them in. And if questions like the proper pH balance of your soil make you feel woozy, you can get advice from the owner. Matsuoka knows gardening …
