House Fire Near Bathgate Elementary Kills Family Pet, Damages 2 Cars

A garage fire early Thursday morning on the 27400 block of Capricho destroyed a car and killed a family dog, Orange County Fire Authority spokesman Steve Concialdi said.

Firefighters were called at 3:04 a.m. to the fire and responded within five minutes, he said.

Two residents in their 70s fled the smoke.

Firefighters found a pet terrier inside the home suffering from smoke inhalation. Rescuers performed CPR, including oxygen and chest suppressions on the dog, Concialdi said, but it died.

The homeowner was treated at the scene of the fire for fatigue. He was not taken to the hospital, the fire captain said.

The fire caused an estimated $200,000 in structural damage and $100,000 in damage to the home's contents, including a car destroyed inside the garage and another car badly damaged in the driveway.

A multi-plug electrical adapter without a circuit breaker was to blame for the fire, Concialdi said. Residents were warned of the fire by smoke detectors inside the home, but the response could have been quicker if the house was equipped with smoke alarms inside the garage, he said.

The spokesman warned residents to avoid older styles of adapters without circuit breakers or surge protectors and also recommended smoke detectors inside garages.
