Five Saddleback Students Take 1st Prize at National Convention

The student film "From Bullets to Bubbles" won Best Documentary, and a Lake Forest resident won Best DJ at the College Broadcasters National Student Production Awards in Orlando.

Five Saddleback College students earned top honors at a national college media convention last month, edging out contenders from four-year institutions.

Together the community college artists took first place in two categories -- Best DJ and Best Documentary -- at the College Broadcasters, Inc. National Student Production Awards at the 2011 National Student Media Convention in Orlando.

Judges at the October 26-30 event received more than 650 entries, representing 40 college stations or classes.

In both categories, the other finalists attended four-year colleges.

“Congratulations to our students for their exemplary work and much-deserved recognition,” said Dr. Tod A. Burnett, President of Saddleback College, “They are an excellent example of the quality students we have in Saddleback’s CTVR (Cinema-Television-Radio) program, due in no small part to our outstanding faculty and staff.”

Here are the winners:

Kelly Jones, Best DJ

The Lake Forest resident and Advanced Radio Broadcasting student was recognized for her work on the college’s radio station KSBR 88.5FM and the college’s web station OCRockRadio.com.

“We are all extremely proud and happy for Kelly,” said Terry Wedel, director of KSBR-FM and OCRockRadio.com. “She’s taken full advantage of the opportunities that students have here at Saddleback to get real hands-on experience, and she has already used that experience to obtain a full-time job at Playlist 92.7.”

From Bullets to Bubbles, Best Documentary

The 22-minute film follows a group of disabled veterans who are trying to reinvent their lives through scuba diving.

Film credits: Producer and Director Debra Hill of Laguna Hills, Assistant Director Zac Rodriguez of Aliso Viejo, cinematographer Ryan Rodriguez of Dana Point and boom operator Larissa Garrett of Foothill Ranch.

Hiro Konishi, Saddleback professor of Cinema, Television and Radio, said it's great that his students won, but “what is more wonderful is that they showed true dedication to the project.”

“Their work ethics made this success possible,” Konishi said.
